What its About

New technological advances, coupled with powerful CAD and synthesis tools, have changed the way in which electronic, instrumentation and telecommunications systems are designed and implemented.  Today, most signal processing functions are carried out using digital techniques and digital systems are realised using VHDL, ASIC and FPGA devices.

It is crucial therefore, that graduates and practicing engineers have the skills, knowledge and understanding to apply new technologies in the design and implementation of modern systems.

The course provides coherent and up to date coverage of electronic engineering with modules in Microelectronic Systems, VLSI, Digital Signal Processing and Telecommunications.

The approach spans specification and design to realisation, with particular emphasis on the application of industry standard CAD tools and DSP devices to develop solutions to practical engineering problems.

What you do

The theme of the award is Power Electronics in Electrical supply industry. The module content and the award structure are designed so that this theme permeate through the award. The key modules, which has industrial input  are "Power Electronics in Electric Utility Systems" , "Flexible AC Transmission systems", Power system protection and Advanced Power Systems. In particular the power system protection module is delivered by Areva Automation Information Systems, a world leader in the manufacture of power system protection equipment and systems. The option modules such as Power Semiconductor devices, Digital signal processing, and control systems provide the students with the additional knowledge and skills for the formation of a true power electronics engineer. You will study 4 modules in the first semester and if you wish you can go away with a PgC.

In the second semester you will study 4 further modules which will make you eligible for a PgD. After completing both semesters you can opt for Industrial Placement if you wish. If not you will go straight into do your project.  Upon successful completion of the project you will be awarded the MSc. Your study length can be variable depending on how much time you spend in industry which could include vacation work.

Where next

Career prospects are excellent. There is a severe shortage of Electrical Engineers worldwide. In particular the renewable energy sector is expanding and it is predicted that 1.5 million jobs will be available worldwide. Students are being offered jobs even before they complete the award.

Entry Requirements:

Normal requirements are at least a UK second class honours degree or equivalent in a related engineering or technology discipline.

If you do not meet the above but have significant appropriate experience, your application will be considered, provided that you satisfy the University that you are capable of responding to the challenge of postgraduate work. 

If your first language is not English, you will need to demonstrate that you are fluent enough to cope with the course. A minimum score of IELTS 6 or TOEFL 550 (213 computer-based) is normally required.
