What it’s about
The Music Broadcasting award allows you to specialise in music radio and television and the integration of programme making, presenting, digital distribution technologies and the complex relationship between broadcasters and the music industry.
What you do

You will be introduced to a wide range of approaches to researching music industries and the essential broadcasting skills for radio and television, along with techniques of production and presentation and the intellectual concepts needed to comprehend the world of music broadcasting. In the second year, you study the changing shape of broadcast audiences: you will be involved in the University’s online radio station, GK Radio and choose between further options in the practice and analysis of music radio and television programme making.
In your final year, you will negotiate a major independent project in your specialism, or an investigative dissertation. You will have further options in freelancing and current commissioning practices, music industries and copyright, as well as more demanding analysis of the forms and social contexts of broadcasting. We assess through a variety of different methods such as essays, reports, evaluations, seminar and large-group presentations, as well as live and pre-recorded programmes and assignments. There are no formal examinations on this course and all work is assessed through coursework.
This course places strong emphasis on your personal development and presentation, alongside challenging intellectual study. Practical work uses digital recording and editing processes, whether for location work or using our extensive range of radio and television studios and production labs. The courses benefit from strong links with local media organisations.
Where next
You will be encouraged to take a systematic, realistic approach to researching your options at the end of the course, which include employment in broadcasting or a media-related line of work.
These courses provide a mix of skills, experiences and intellectual development that are attractive to a very wide range of employers.
