What it’s about

This course will give you detailed study of recording studio technology alongside study of business and management within the music industry.

Much of the management content is provided by the University’s Business School with specific input from people working in the music industry. The music technology department has extensive resources including an 80 seat computer centre with Macs and some PCs running Logic, Ableton Live, Mac/MSP, Cubase, Reason, etc., five traditional studios and three Pro Tools HD2 Accel suites. The University also has Avid accredited status, enabling students to undertake further industry-recognised qualifications

What you do

You will also be able to develop the interactive content found on most CD albums, as well as acoustic analysis of studios and performance spaces.

The course (PDF, file size: 39.52KB) is highly practical and you will learn about recording technology, studio equipment, live sound, acoustics and electro acoustics as well as business modules such as events management and project management. There are modules on personal professional development and strategic entrepreneurship and an individual project makes up a large proportion of the final year.

Graduates will be qualified to work within the technological, media, business and management areas of music and related industries, providing technical solutions for sound production and quality in recording studios, live sound venues and digital videos with a good grounding in management

'Graduating in 2009 & following a stint in Touring Concert Production, I started an internship at Universal Music Group in June with Polydor Records and have been very lucky to have been promoted to a full time Digital Marketing Assistant. Alongside assisting the department I have been given a roster of my own acts and some fantastic projects including All time low, Jimmy Eat World, Bryan Adams + some developing acts you'll see more of next year. It also means im assisting on some huge campaigns, with some really experienced campaign managers including the new Take That album & Duffy's new album - so it's been fantastic and just keeps getting better!

I'm also looking after the Down the Front sessionswe've got some really exciting sessions coming up in the new year for this, i've also become involved in some of the work we've done with new iPhone apps and am currently developing one on behalf of the label

Working for a Major Label had always been a goal of mine... being able to work at the biggest label in the UK, blast music all day, go to some great concerts, meet amazing people AND get paid for it is fantastic" Olivia Hobbs BSc(Hons) Music Technology with Management.

"During my final year of Staffs Uni I began an internship working with international music distribution company DittoMusic. I began working for Ditto in Feb 2009 and from starting as an intern have now worked my way up to the Vice Presidency of this exciting and developing Independent company. From working as an intern making tea and coffee, to being utilized as a manager in regard to the technical process of distribution to my current role where I am in charge of European business development and am directly responsible for the heading up Label relations.

Ditto as a company have hugely expanded from 4 people working in an office in Birmingham to become on of the largest independent distributors of music in Europe and have recently opened up a satellite office in the USA and will follow with an Australian HQ by winter 2011. So working in the planning releases, marketing campaigns around them and being directly involved with Labels and artists is a dream for me, getting paid to work with music ain't bad at all."
