Post-Compulsory Education
BA(Hons)
Key Features
If you work in the Lifelong Learning Sector - in further, adult and community education, prison education or work-based education and training, you have a Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory) or a Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) and you want to gain a degree, this course is for you.
The course is designed specifically for people who wish to combine work and study. It recognises that you will have gained the knowledge and understanding necessary to undertake study at higher education level through developing your professional awareness in the context of your work and through gaining your Certificate in Education or DTLLS. The course is, therefore, designed to enhance your work in current and future roles.
What it's about
The course is also designed to help you to continue to develop as an excellent practitioner, building on the foundations in the Certificate in Education.
The emphasis is on supporting you in your day to day teaching and in possible career development at a time when post-compulsory education is about to undergo radical changes in the ways teachers are trained and then developed once qualified.
What you do
There are nine modules in the two year, part-time programme. All the modules will be closely related to your work in post-compulsory education so that work based tasks will involve you to demonstrate their skills in the workplace and bringing evidence to study sessions.
In addition, Module 1 will be linked to a Professional Development Plan which will support your professional and career development in your workplace. Modules 5 and 8 (Professional Practice 1 and 2) will provide you with direct opportunities for accrediting your day to day work as a post-compulsory teacher.
Assessment will be through a variety of assignments, presentations and portfolios, again, all designed to draw on and support your work as a post-compulsory teacher. Attendance is designed to help you move straight from the Certificate in Education or DTLLS onto the BA course. Thus, it is organised on the basis of a three hour session per week over 35 weeks. School/college holidays and half-terms will be self study time. The course will be run at the University campuses in Lichfield, Stafford and Stoke, subject to numbers recruited at each centre.
Where Next?
Once you graduate, you will be able to consider one of the Masters level awards in our MA Education programme.
