What it’s about
You will work on exciting and diverse projects like toys, domestic products, transport, fitness equipment and lighting. Access to excellent 3D workshops and CAD modelling facilities and using industry standard software, will enable you to present your work to a professional standard.
We have a good range of industrial contacts who run live projects with us at all levels. There will also be opportunities to visit design consultancies, agencies and manufacturing companies.
What our students say
“The course has a good range of projects, and the diversity of these has given me confidence in many new areas of study. The use of external companies has also provided vital work experience and the confidence to present my ideas, and have faith in my own ability. The course has also given me many other skills that will help me in the future including model making, 3D CAD, sketching, graphic design and many more. I feel that I have gained a great deal from the course and the tutors, and have the confidence to go into the industry with a great deal to offer.”

What you do

At Level 4 you will be introduced to core skills through structured and practical design projects, involving idea generation, drawing and rendering, model making and computer work.
The teaching and learning techniques are varied and include individual and group design work, tutorials, seminars and presentations.
Level 5 students will study concept generation, ergonomics and usability, materials and manufacture and aesthetics. You will cover more advanced CAD projects and appreciate the role of Rapid Prototyping. You will also work on collaborative projects with Transport Design, Design Management and other courses.
At Level 6, you will complete a major design project in an area of your choosing. This flexibility gives you the means to indulge in truly original and innovative thinking. You will have the opportunity to enter national design competitions, work with real clients and exhibit to the public and potential employers at the end of year degree show and at New Designers in London. There are opportunities for placement work in the vacations or by taking a year out. Our design courses are involved in a number of initiatives whereby you may be able to gain funding to progress your major third year project to a fully working prototype.
