Professional Engineering

MSc, Postgraduate Certificate (PgC), Postgraduate Diploma (PgD)

Key Features

  • Cost-effective for employers - Avoids costs associated with having key personnel away from work for extended periods.
  • New route to recognition - The new work-based MSc opens a route to CEng registration for many who might otherwise miss out. Students are given step by step guidance along the route to CEng.
  • Professional Development Audit - Students are asked to complete a PDA to identify any shortfall in competencies required by Professional Engineering Institutions and to help define the negotiated M-level programme.
  • Negotiated Learning Contract - Students are given a structured programme of study requiring them to produce appropriate material for assessment.  The study and the assessment material is negotiated individually with each student so as make maximum use of what is needed by the employer.  Study programmes are also designed to ensure that the UK-SPEC list of competencies are met.
  • Employability - Students registered on this programme are generally studying material that is of direct and indirect benefit to their employer. They therefore are more likely to experience better career progression and are less likely to seek employment elsewhere.

What it's about

This is a work-based learning postgraduate award designed for students who are currently in employment and for a variety of reasons can-not attend university but can study at their place of work, and be educated to Masters level through a programme involving collaboration between the university, a Professional Engineering Institution (PEI) and an industrial partner.  Within this programme, academic challenges at MSc level, together with competencies required by the PEI are clearly addressed.

One of the many advantages of this system is that students registered on this programme do not have to attend university apart from seminar and assessment days (an alternative arrangement may be possible for students not resident in the UK) thus reducing the costs of staff development for employers.  An excellent feature of this programme is the final project which can be designed to correlate with the work that the student is doing for their employer.

Candidates completing this award successfully should be able to demonstrate the requirements for CEng registration.

Fact File

Qualification:

MSc, Postgraduate Certificate (PgC), Postgraduate Diploma (PgD)

Faculty/School:

Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Technology

Location:

Stafford Campus

Course Start: The Faculty hosts formal induction and seminar days on three occasions during the year (normally September, February and April)  to assist students in starting their studies and in adhering to schedule. Most students begin their studies with one of these events.
Course Length:

The course normally lasts for 2 years for part time study although you normally have a maximum of 5 years to complete the award. Students taking this award on a full time basis would be expected to complete it in 52 weeks.  Your individual completion date will depend on your prior knowledge and experience and the amount of time you are able to devote to your studies.

Attendance:

• Work Based Study
Your work may already be of Masters level, using the MSc Advanced Technology award you can get full recognition for it by submitting it towards a Masters degree from Staffordshire University.  This is also a way in which your employer may provide an opportunity for you to further your education in areas of study directly related to your employment thus making you a more efficient employee.  Virtually all parts of the course can be studied at your place of work.  You need to attend the University only to maintain contact with tutors and to present your work at seminars.

• Part Time Study
This is for students who are employed in industry in a capacity which provides an appropriate setting for MSc study. You will be assigned a supervisor who will guide your studies throughout the course.  Your supervisor will set assignments for you and will recommend material for you to study as required to complete your assignments by self study.  Your supervisor will be available for consultation via email, phone etc.

• Full Time Study
This course is primarily offered on a part time basis, but you can also study full time if you wish. You will need to be available at Staffordshire University full time during teaching semesters.  You may be given taught classes to attend as part of your studies for Modules 1, 2 and 3.  These classes will be selected to provide appropriate contributions to your course of study, but will not provide all the content required for all of the modules.

You will also be assigned a supervisor who will give you additional assignments for self study to complete the requirements for Modules 1, 2 and 3. Your supervisor will recommend study material as required for you to complete these assignments.  Your supervisor will be available for consultation on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

Entry Requirements:

Normal requirements are at least a second class honours degree or equivalent in technology, engineering, or a discipline related to the proposed MSc Advanced Technology title.

If you do not meet the above but you have significant appropriate experience, you may be considered for enrolment provided that you can satisfy the University that you are capable of responding to the challenge of postgraduate work.

If your first language is not English, you will need to demonstrate that you are fluent enough to cope with the course. A minimum score of IELTS 6 or TOEFL 550 (213 computer-based) is normally required.
