What it’s about
Psychology is concerned with understanding all aspects of human behaviour and a person’s underlying thoughts, feelings and motivations. You will be expected to have a great interest in investigating and analysing how humans think, feel and behave. The Foundation Year will encourage you to develop further your own problem solving, communication and interpersonal skills. After successful completion of the Foundation Year, which is held at both Newcastle-under-Lyme College and Stafford College, you will finish your studies at the Stoke campus of Staffordshire University.
What you do
The Foundation Year is delivered in two semesters within the normal academic calendar of the College. The course is modular and consists of four modules specifically designed to ensure that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to continue onto your psychology degree. These modules include cognitive psychology, social psychology, biological psychology, human development and research methods. In addition, there are the applied modules: Psychology and Crime and Psychology and the Environment. To complement your studies in Psychology, you will also enhance your IT and study skills throughout the academic year.
A variety of teaching and learning methods are employed to deliver the course and these are tailored to meet your needs. A wide variety of assessment tools are used: formal essays, class tests, coursework, presentations and examinations. The purpose of this is to give you the opportunity to develop your assessment skills throughout the year and to demonstrate your strengths in different types of assessment.
Where next
On completion you will then join one of the three-year psychology awards at Staffordshire University. You will offer to employers a unique combination of analytic and personal skills. Graduates are able to analyse problems, use computer skills and design investigations and are especially aware of human relationships. Opportunities are available in a wide variety of industrial, commercial and public sector organisations. A number of psychology graduates pursue careers as professional psychologists in the areas of organisation, health, counselling, education, forensic and clinical practice.
