Careers in Radio Production are ever-expanding. New digital, terrestrial and online stations are springing up and this course is designed to provide you with the skills required to join this exciting industry. The kinds of careers you can aspire to are wide-ranging and include presenting and researching, music programming and speech or music production.


This course is aimed at equipping you with the intellectual and practical skills needed in the expanding world of radio. As the number of stations increases - online, digital and terrestrial - so there are more radio production jobs around. The course is designed so you can choose which pathway you want, music or speech-based, or a mixture of the two.

Modules researching the music industry and the essential broadcasting skills for radio are covered, with techniques of production
and presentation and the intellectual concepts needed to comprehend the world of radio broadcasting. Further study explores the practice and analysis of radio programme making.

You will become involved in the University’s online radio station, GK Radio. In your final year, you will negotiate a major independent project in a particular specialism, or an investigative dissertation. There are further options in freelancing and current commissioning practices, as well as more demanding analysis of the forms and social contexts of broadcasting.

Assessment is through a variety of methods such as essays, reports, evaluations, seminar and large-group presentations, as well as live and pre-recorded programmes and assignments. There are no formal examinations on this course and all work is assessed through coursework.

This course places strong emphasis on personal development and presentation, alongside challenging intellectual study. Practical work uses digital recording and editing processes, whether for location work or using our extensive range of radio and television studios and production labs. The course benefits from strong links with local media organisations.
