Robotics Engineering

BEng(Hons), BSc(Hons)
UCAS code: H675

Key features

  • Build Robots from the first week of your course

  • Design Robots to aid a variety of settings including: hospitals, hostile surroundings, underwater, off shore, underground, the home, manufacturing plants etc.

  • Learn design and programming techniques by applying them when creating robots

What it’s about

The main focus of this award is to build robots.  From exploiting the power of the Lego mind storms systems in the first year to individually designed robots of your Final Year Project will will be building robots throughout the course.

This award draws on the Faculty’s longstanding expertise in the area of mechatronic engineering, control and robotics and aim to teach design through applications of robotics and cyber-technology for the home, leisure and industry. After graduation you will be able to understand and create robot-based solutions to everyday problems. Control and robotics are emphasised throughout the course, with specialist applications including those to assist disabled people, enhance industrial productivity or to exploit the latest control philosophies and techniques.

What you do

Level 1 is largely shared with other awards in the Engineering and Technology Programme, providing a grounding in aspects of electronic and mechanical engineering and design technologies, plus a module introducing robotics and its principles through design and build projects.

At Levels 2 and 3, much of your study will be specifically devoted to robotics modules, along with the modelling, analysis and design methodologies and technologies which are the heart of engineering and technology awards. Your final project will be distinctively yours and is likely to reflect your interest in robotic systems, their design, implementation and analysis.

The award team recommends and supports the undertaking of the optional industrial placement between Levels 2 and 3. This will provide you with additional experience and further enhance your employability.

More about the faculty

Where next

Students completing this award have a wide range of transferable skills together with an ability to apply design methodologies and tools, particularly to the area of robotic systems as well as the ability to analyse robotic systems and supporting.

After graduating you will be equipped to enter the industrial world of modern automated processing with the skills to design hi-tech robotic solutions to fulfil the requirements of a diverse range of industrial applications.

Graduates with exceptional abilities may continue their studies for a taught postgraduate MSc degree or onto postgraduate research for an MPhil or PhD degree.
