Screenwriting with Film Studies
BA(Hons)
UCAS code: W8P3
At a glance
This course is designed to integrate the art and craft of screenwriting for cinema and television with the academic and practical study of film. It is designed specifically for those students who harbour a passion for writing creatively for the cinema in the form of screenplays, but who also want to learn about film in historical. theoretical, and practical terms.
There is the opportunity for the student to learn about various kinds of screenplays, mainly by conceiving and writing them: short films, silent short films, adaptation of previously published material and feature-length films. There is also an opportunity to make short video productions. The academic study of screenwriting and film is encountered in various ways: narrative theories, film history, international cinema movements, film theory, textual analysis, and the Hollywood and British film industries
The creative, theoretical, and practical strands of the course complement each other throughout the three years. Meanwhile, in the final year, the student encounters a choice between major project options, all of which synthesise the learning and experience attained in the first two years. Students have three options: to write an original feature length screenplay for cinema or television; to research and write a dissertation, exploring an academic aspect of either screenwriting or film; or to write a short film script, and actually make the short film itself.
