What it's about

This module will help you develop knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of sexual health advising through a programme of self directed study. This is also a core module for the Specialist practice route for Sexual Health Adviser registration on Part 3 of the NMC Register. It is suitable for any health and social care professional who wishes to gain credits for their professional development in Sexual health Advising.

What you do

This module will examine issues associated with sexual health advising practice including an overview of sexually acquired infections.
The historical background of the public health role of the sexual health adviser, incorporating the modules and practice of partner notification and health promoting practice, including both community and hospital based practice will be examined.
Examination of current and future development of the sexual health adviser’s role.
Legal and professional framework of sexual health advising; including historical development and examination of current legislation and professional and ethical guidelines affecting practice.
Exploration of different communication models, development of skills and practice of such with the individual presenting to a sexual health adviser.
Exploration of specific cultural and gender issues.
Examination of personal values and judgements and impact upon practice.
