What it’s about
Software Engineering is all about creating software – computer programs. It involves learning and using programming languages such as Java and C++, but that’s just the beginning – it’s also about deciding what a software system needs to do to solve a real-world problem, designing a solution that fulfils these needs, developing, testing and maintaining it. For software solutiuons to be useful to business they need to be well engineered, ensuring robustness is one of the main concerns of software engineering.
What you do
In your first two years, you will obtain a firm foundation in computing topics such as procedural and object-oriented programming, algorithms, systems analysis and design, computer architecture, operating systems, networks and mathematics. You will write software in several widely-used programming languages such as Java, C , C++, and C#, and you will learn about all phases of the system development life cycle.
If, like the vast majority of our students, you enrol on the sandwich degree, you will spend your third year on placement, applying your knowledge in the workplace and gaining valuable experience.
The final year involves advanced subjects such as programming language concepts and algorithms, design patterns and techniques, creating enterprise and real-time systems, and software project management. You will also undertake a substantial project, which could involve developing software algorithms or creating a complete software solution to solve a real-world problem.
Where next
Software engineers develop programs in all areas of the computing industry – from business systems to computer games to embedded systems. Typical job titles of recent graduates include Application Programmer, Software Engineer and Systems Developer.
