What it's about

This innovative degree is for students interested in understanding human behaviour in sport and exercise settings. The study of Psychology is combined with, and applied to, the study of sport and exercise activity. The course will enable you to develop knowledge of sport and exercise related activity and your understanding of all aspects of human behaviour will be enhanced.
You will need to have an interest in understanding, investigating and analysing how humans think, feel and behave. You will recognise the role that the scientific study of sport and exercise can play in both the optimum preparation of the human body for athletic performance and in maintaining longer-term healthy lifestyles. A flexible structure is offered that allows you to develop a wide combination of analytical, practical and personal skills.
Students must recognise that training in sport and exercise psychology is acquired through postgraduate education and supervised practice, not through an undergraduate degree. On completion of this programme students are not qualified to practice as a sports/exercise psychologist without further training in sport and exercise psychology.
What you do
Levels 1 and Level 2 cover the essential foundation studies including social psychology, research methods, cognitive psychology, human development, human physiology, sport and exercise psychology, health related activity, nutrition and metabolism. A wide range of modules from Psychology, Sport and Exercise is available.
At Level 3 you can develop your knowledge of core studies and applied areas of psychology, sport and exercise, such as Health Psychology, The Psychology of Drugs and The Psychology of Eating. You will also undertake a substantial piece of research in the form of an empirical project during your third year, where you have the opportunity to contribute your own findings to existing research and theory.
Where next?
To prospective employers, this award offers a combination of analytical, practical and personal skills. Opportunities are available in a wide variety of commercial and public sector organisations that recognise the long-term benefits of regular and sustained involvement in physical activity. This degree will provide a particularly useful foundation for postgraduate study in health related psychology, sport and exercise.
