What it's about

The award provides students with a critical understanding of current issues relating to the application of psychological theory to sport and exercise settings. It has been developed for individuals who possess Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS). It is accredited by the BPS and provides the first stage in a training process towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist and registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC) as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist. The course is part-time, taking two years to complete, and is delivered in a distance learning format through an electronic Virtual Learning Environment.

Course Start: One intake each year at September.  There is a maximum intake of 20 students per annum across this award (and the related MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology).
Course Length:

MSc: Normally two years.
Postgraduate Diploma: 120 credits normally over 16 months .
Postgraduate Certificate: 60 credits, normally over eight months.
Modules may also be studied on an individual basis.

Attendance:

Distance taught.  Attendance is compulsory on four separate occasions during the award: An induction workshop (start of course); A ‘consultancy skills’ workshop (after 60 credits); A dissertation preparation workshop (after 120 credits) and finally there is a presentation day, also comprising a viva voce, at the University campus for those who have completed the dissertation.

Entry Requirements:

The award is aimed at those individuals who have graduated from psychology related degrees and possess Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS).  Those individuals who do not possess GBC may wish to consider applying for the MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology which is also delivered online, in a distance learning format.

Currently there are no bursaries for these awards. Applicants can apply for a career development loan from the usual agencies.
