“Our relationship with Staffs University has developed during the time over which The FA has launched the Women’s Super League. Our partnership has provided some great opportunities, both for students to experience professional sport and for The FA to engage dedicated and well trained young professionals.
On a personal level I have long since been aware of the reputation for the University and its quality cast of tutors, and having employed Staffordshire University students in the past I can vouch for their first class courses.”

What our students say

"The course offers a fantastic insight into what life is like in the industry. The modules are varied and interesting with a great balance between practical and theory work. You make some amazing friends and the lecturers are always there to guide you with their expert knowledge. The advantage of using the same facilities as top professional media companies is a great help when making the transition from university to a job.
I got my first job through the fantastic reputation of Staffordshire and I am now working in a busy TV production company where I regularly work on the women's super league, at football grounds such as Wembley, Arsenal and Chelsea and will this summer be at the French Open in Paris for ITV. I enjoy what I do everyday and it's all thanks to the three years I spent at Staffordshire."
Laura Knight, Input Media - Graduated, 2010
What it’s about
The BA(Hons) in Sports Journalism is designed to give you the best possible chance of succeeding in your chosen career. We will introduce you to the basic and advanced skills of a fast growing and exciting profession. Sports journalism builds on the expertise of our widely acclaimed and professionally accredited Journalism and Broadcast Journalism courses. You can take your NCTJ exams including the new qualification in sports reporting.
Practical modules are studied in our dedicated Broadcast Journalism and Journalism Newsrooms.
What you do

Level 4 will introduce you to the practical skills of journalism, including the reporting of sports events in print, radio and TV; give a background to sports policy and introduce you to the sociology of sport. You will also learn media law and shorthand.
Level 5 modules are designed to improve your sports news writing and feature writing skills and teach you techniques of sports broadcasting. You will also receive essential technical training in editing and production techniques in preparation for work placement in a sports journalism environment.
Level 6 allows you to concentrate on the particular area of sports journalism that interests you.
Where next
Many of our students have gone on to careers in a broad range of organisations, from the Press Association, major soccer clubs, the BBC, ITV, ESPN, Sky, national and local newspapers and specialist magazines. Good writing, effective communication skills, intellectual flexibility and personal initiative are also relevant to a wide range of careers.
We encourage all students to take part in as much work experience within the industry as possible throughout their time with us. There is a three-week assessed work placement within the course (at Level 2) and this is often where students make contacts that can later lead to paid employment.
