Do you want to gain a Level 2 qualification (GCSE equivalence) in English language? You may have failed your examination when at school, or you may not have had the opportunity to take it. Now this may be preventing you from moving on in your career, or furthering your education. It may simply be hampering you in your everyday life. You can remedy this situation in six weeks during the summer by attending our summer school in English.

Who is the English Summer School for?

It’s for anyone who lives in Staffordshire, who is 17 years or over and who is not at present involved in Higher Education or who already has a degree. You don’t need any qualifications to join; but you should note this not a basic literacy course. We can give you information about such courses, the Summer School, however, is designed to help you to gain a level 2 qualification (GCSE equivalence).

We give priority to those who are currently experiencing unemployment, or financial difficulty. But we have a broad range of criteria for the rest of the places on the course so do ring us to enquire.

How much will it cost?

The course is free of charge including learning materials.

Where and when?

Classes are held at Staffordshire University campus in Stoke. You will have access to our Library and Information Services with its full range of books and internet sources in our computer labs. Future dates are to be confirmed - for further information, please contact Enquiries on 01782 294400.

What will I do, who will teach me?

All of the classes are designed to help you gain confidence in and improve your written and oral use of the English language. It will enhance your employability skills and assist you to go on to further study with us or at your local college.

The tutors who teach you  are all chosen for their experience in teaching this level of English language. You will be in a group of around 15, supported by the tutor and their assistant: your will have individual support in class and through ‘drop-in’ sessions.

What is the work like? Are there examinations?

No, there is not a final examination. You do a range of assessments during the six week period and this enables you to chart your own progress. If your don’t make it the first time in an assessment you can have another go at it.

What will I achieve?

Complete all four units and you will receive the Level 2 qualification (GCSE equivalence) validated by the Open College Network, West Midlands.
