What our students say
“Surface Pattern Design is not just a course – it’s a way of life. It opens your eyes to pattern and potential inspiration for designs all around you. It gives you a whole new and very exciting way of looking and it becomes impossible to switch off and ignore it”.
(Sylvia Thomas, Level Four).
What it’s about
The BA(Hons) Surface Pattern Design Award is well established and is constantly moving with the times in response to market needs and trends. Our students are interested in manipulating images, exploring scale, colour and composition and enjoy drawing and designing for a diverse range of products, from wallpaper to fashion fabrics and from ceramics to gift cards and floor coverings.
What you do

Level 4 will introduce you to the surface pattern design process from initial research through to design awareness, development and realisation. You have the opportunity to work as part of a team, using and developing inter-personal, organisational and presentation skills. Level 5 will develop your technical competence and practical design skills, including the exploration and implementation of computer aided design. You will explore market trends and colour forecasting and respond to live project briefs with industry.
At Level 6, you personalise and refine working methods and adopt a professional, competitive attitude. Your studies culminate in the end of year degree show, when your work is on display, not only at the Stoke campus but also exhibited nationally at the New Designers exhibition. Over the last few years, we have received five design for excellence awards resulting in financial rewards and work placements. The majority of modules are practical, studio and workshop based, underpinned by contextual, theoretical study. Modules are delivered through a combination of integral studio work, demonstrations, workshops, tutorials, critiques, seminars and lectures.
Where next
Together with a future as a designer, there are a wide range of other opportunities available to you including styling, merchandising and teaching. Our graduates are successful in finding work both in industry and in setting up small businesses or working freelance.
Particular examples include studio designer for Design Works International in New York, Designer for Accessorize, Upholstery Designer for the Ford Motor Company, Designer: Children’s Wear for Mamas and Papas, George, Turner Bianca and Mothercare and Gift Card Designers and Design Managers for Hallmark, Watermark, Tigerprint, CCA and Second Nature.
