2012 course information

What it’s about

‘Visit Britain’ shows that tourism is worth more than £85 billion to the British economy, accounting for 3.5% of the UK economy and sustaining two million full-time equivalent jobs. Clearly, such a large and important industry presents a number of managerial challenges requiring suitably qualified graduates in middle and senior management positions. This course provides an integrated and thorough overview of all aspects of tourism management to enable students to meet these challenges.

The award has been developed with reference to guidelines published by the Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism (HLST) Network and a well-established award team which has facilitated the coming together of research, consultancy and teaching. The course has also received employers’ support through links with regional and national tourism organisations and has recently been formally recognised and accredited by the Tourism Management Institute.

What you do

Students study modules in Tourism and Events Dynamics, Tourism Industry, Business Tourism, Arts and Heritage Business, Sport and Recreational Tourism, Tourist Destinations, Managing the Tourism Service Encounter, Sustainable Tourism and Events, International Leisure and Tourism Marketing, and Contemporary Issues in Tourism, together with an in depth investigation of a tourism topic of your choice. Particular highlights of the course are the tourism-related visits and the extent to which students engage with the broad hospitality industry through the Tourism in Action and Tourism in Practice modules. You will also study the core subjects necessary for a career in management within the travel and tourism sector such as Business Skills, Marketing Principles, Business Accounting, and Managing People and Performance.

It is also possible to undertake an accredited placement at the end of the second year, to develop tourism work-related business skills. The course is also designed to develop a range of practical and employability skills such as communication, applying technology, creativity,
decision-making, problem solving, critical reasoning and the development of research methods. These skills are developed through assignments, examinations, in-class and independent learning activities. Learning is through lectures, seminars, case studies, group projects, presentations and an investigation project. The assignments are both vocational and practical and involve live research that will further enhance your management skills.

Where next

The award provides graduates with the skills necessary for hospitality and general management and more specific career options, which include: tourism operations, the travel business and tourism marketing and related service industries. Graduates are particularly suited to opportunities in hospitality, leisure and public service industries and Local Authorities. The course is ideal for postgraduate study in tourism or for a teaching qualification.
