What it’s about
Web design is becoming more important as more devices and electronics are using wireless computer networks to surf the web, from desktop computers to mobile phones and handheld games devices. Students studying this degree will become a specialist in the technologies and principles involved in web design and computer networks. They will also gain a solid foundation in computing, including databases and programming, so that they can communicate through computer networks and interact with people who will be developing the back end to web applications.
What you do
Levels 1 and 2 of the award will give you a good foundation in computing and network technology, concentrating on the technologies concerned with web design and how web designers can communicate with web programmers using computer networks. You will study user interfaces, web design, web media, media conversion for website delivery, web standards. You will learn how to gather user requirements and convert those into reality using prototype interfaces and will become specialist in CSS, user interactions, accessibility and human computer interaction using the latest tools such as Dreamweaver, Flash and Microsoft Expression Studio to design the interfaces of web applications. You will also study the basics of programming, hardware and databases to enable them to understand and work with web programmers.
At Level 2, there will be the opportunity to take options in e-commerce, e-marketing, multimedia and web programming modules to further your knowledge, or take up options in a different area of computing, such as games or forensics.
Level 3 builds on your previous levels to further your knowledge in web design. You will also look at future interfaces in the world of ubiquitous computing as many of these interfaces can utilise wireless Internet technologies. Options will allow you to further the skills you gained at Level 1 and 2. The final year project will allow you to demonstrate the skills you have developed over your course.
Where next
In choosing this design network technology course, you will be joining a growing and expanding area of computing with good employment opportunities, as nearly all sectors of industry are now employing the usage of web-based designers. Job titles in this area include Web Designer and Flash Designer.
