What it’s about

These awards are designed to provide a route to an honours degree following the completion of an appropriate HND or equivalent. They provide a seamless progression route for applicants who have completed a Staffordshire University HND in the exact subject area as well as being available for those with qualifications in subjects that are compatible from other institutions. It is possible to combine the study of the HND and the TopUp (with placement) to complete an honours degree in the same time period as a sandwich degree student.

The courses run over 18 months without a placement or a minimum of 24 months with a placement. We strongly recommend that the sandwich award is taken.

If on a sandwich award, you will study for 12 months and then complete a six-month or 12 month placement before returning to a semester of study at the University, which consists of doing a project (3 level 3 Modules) plus a general option module.

If you apply for a Top-up that does not naturally follow your HND content we will advise you of the appropriate options.

What you do

You will study a mixture of level 2 and level 3 modules over the first academic year which lead to an ordinary degree in Web Development.  You will then have one additional module and the Final Year Project to complete which leads to the BSc(Hons) Web Development.

Web Development is an award for those wishing to become specialist in design and development of computing for the web and related technologies. This award allows you to study all areas of web development from design, programming, media and enterprise. The award allows you to specialize at a later stage should you wish to, or stay a generalist in web development. Students will study the latest technologies and programming languages suitable for web development.

The awards are offered on both a full time and part time basis. In the case of the full time award, the course takes 12 months to reach BSc level and a further 6 months to reach BSc(Hons) level. The duration is increased by 6 months (or 12 months) if an industrial placement period is taken between the ordinary and honours part of the award.  A typical time table assuming a 1 year placement is shown below. Note the 4 level I and 4 level H modules may be taken in either Semester 1 or Semester 2

Where next

In choosing this award you will be signing up to a rapidly developing area of high bandwidth and media computing – with large employment opportunities – as most companies and industries now use large elements of media on their websites. Job titles include Web Developer, Web Designer, Web Media Producer, Flash Developer and Flash Programmer.
