What it’s about
There is a rise in the number of Rich Internet Applications being produced, which incorporate web systems/technologies, graphics, and video to enhance the user experience. Web systems/technologies and software engineering are also being used in the development of widgets for desktop computing and increasingly for mobile devices. Web Multimedia is an award for those wishing to become specialist in the web design and development of such applications, understanding the computer science behind web development and software engineering and further-more creating a high media/broadband website and convert media using skills in website design to make it suitable for Internet delivery.
What you do
Levels 4 and 5 (years 1 & 2) of the course will give you a good foundation in web computing and computer science including programming, hardware and databases. You then go onto specialise in web development of high media websites and rich Internet applications. This includes converting and creating media for web delivery, web design, web standards, web development in Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight, programming in Adobe Action Script and Flex, and streaming video and audio in Flash, Real and Windows Media, developing an understanding of web systems/technologies, software engineering and streaming servers. You will also build web applications in languages such as PHP and ASP.NET
Level 6 (year 3) expands on the knowledge gained previously and also covers topics such as SMIL, SVG, web standards, live web broadcast, online game development and podcasting. You can also take options to develop further skills in gaming, or building up further web multimedia skills.
Where next
In choosing this award and understanding all aspects of the computer science behind these area, you will be signing up to a rapidly developing area of high bandwidth and media computing – with large employment opportunities – as most companies and industries now use large elements of media on their websites. Job titles include Web Developer, Web Designer, Web Media Producer, Flash Developer and Flash Programmer.
