What its about
This award aims to meet the continuing professional development needs of people engaged in all areas of youth and community work, offering a learning experience that reflects the multi-agency environment in which the work takes place. The awards provide up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting work practices and a range of skills you can use within the work place. The programme content has been devised in collaboration with professionals from a variety of organisations across the voluntary, public and private sectors. It is taught by a cross-university group of academics and external specialists, all of whom have an active interest in, and engagement with, youth and community work. A wide range of options are available which, with the material presented in the core modules and the opportunity to choose the focus of the dissertation, enable a substantial degree of specialisation.
What you do
The flexible nature of the programme means that you can learn in bite-sized chunks: you can take as many or as few modules as you want at any one time; you can build-up credits
to achieve the PG Certificate and then stop or continue to the Diploma. Once you have reached diploma level, you can complete the MA by submitting a dissertation on a topic
chosen by you. This means that you can make your award particularly relevant to your area of work.
The learning experience focuses upon discussion, critical debate and the development and application of a series of advanced work-related skills and competencies. The award is designed to relate directly to your work and to enable you to enhance your critical understanding of the broader policy context in which you are operating. You will also be asked to relate this to the situations and themes which occur in your work-place.
Modules available include:
Contemporary Youth Work – Perspectives, Policies and Practice
Empowering Communities
Research Methods
Master’s Dissertation in Youth and Community Work
You can also choose a range of options from the Regeneration, Community Arts, Community Practice, International Politics, Social and Cultural Theory and Performance Coaching and Mentoring provision. The wide option choices allow you to personalise your learning and create a programme that articulates with your educational background, your interests and/or the interests of your employer.
Where next?
The MA is an internationally-recognised qualification which will significantly enhance your career prospects, whether you are relatively new to the area of youth and community work or if you have many years of experience in the voluntary, community, public or private sectors.
