Disabled students

Welcome to the Disabled Student Centre

Staffordshire University positively welcomes disabled students. Across the whole University, we have made and continue to make many changes to the way we operate to remove the barriers experienced by disabled people.

The Disabled Student Centres aim to ensure that your individual needs are met before you start, during your course of study and after you leave. We want you to enjoy your University life to the full and, working together, rather than for you, we will help you achieve your potential.

We provide four distinct functions to our students

  • Staffordshire Regional Access Centre provides an impartial, confidential and professional assessment of study support needs.
  • Disabled Student Support looks at your individual needs and helps you create and manage a comprehensive support programme.
  • Dyslexia Support will help you find out if you are dyslexic and work with you to get the support you need.
  • Specialist Support provides support and advice to students experiencing issues with their mental wellbeing.

The Disabled Student Centres also recognises the need to involve disabled people in our decision making. Over the next year, we will be looking for accessible ways of engaging and involving students and would welcome your thoughts and contributions on how we might achieve this.

What to expect from the Disabled Student Centres

Staffordshire University is committed to giving you the best support possible whilst you are with us. This support starts before you arrive and continues past your completion.

We ensure that our service is as friendly, accessible and efficient as is possible and is delivered in an environment that is caring, confidential and secure.

Working with you to identify barriers underpins all that we do and we want you to enjoy the University experience to the full. To do this, we recognise that effective support is a two-way process and that you have a key part to play in the management of your support. We will discuss your responsibilities with you when we first meet.

We are moving away from the Medical Model of Disability towards the Social Model and are working hard to remove the barriers that disable people in our community. We listen to the views of disabled people and respond as well as we are able to effect change.

Unlike support that you may have received before you chose to come to University, we would like to emphasise that, as an adult, you have significant responsibility for the management of your support and would ask you to pay particular attention to our requests for you to respond quickly where this is indicated below. This is because we understand that having support in place at the start of your course is critical to your success.
