Start Up
I found it helped to ease transition to University.. registering etc, finding my way around, meeting people and getting to know others with similar difficulties. I also realised the support that was available and it helped me to get into a routine.
Start Up Attendee, 2011.
The Student Enabling Centre hosts an early welcome event, 'Start Up', for new disabled students starting the University in September.
Start Up is for both new students moving into Halls of Residence and for new students living locally and takes place before Welcome Week at both the Stoke and Stafford campuses.
There is a choice of events to allow you to tailor the programme to ensure that you get the individual information you need for the start of your studies as well as lots of social events to help you to settle in quickly and make new friends.
Programme

The programme starts on Wednesday 12th September and leads into the main University Welcome. The programme contains sessions on the use of specialist study skills tuition and an introduction to study skills support together with an Assistive Technology workshop which introduces specialist software programs specifically designed for use by student with specific learning difficulties like dyslexia.
You will also have the opportunity to familiarise yourself with examination, assignment and assessment arrangements and meet advisors and faculty staff, including an introduction to the Specialist Student Advisors, Study Support Mentors and Counselling Service.
As well as lots of social events to help you settle in quickly and make new friends, there will be a workshop on Living With Other People, as the prospect of living with new people for the first time can be daunting at first! This session will provide an insight on some of the things that you can expect, as well as how to help yourself to settle in and get to know others students.
In addition to all of this you will be able to move in to your accommodation early, beat the enrolment queues and you will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of social activities.
