Dyslexia Support
Many of the students we support are dyslexic and the support we offer reflects the wide diversity of individual needs we encounter with our students. We recognise that some students are worried about the diagnosis of dyslexia but we feel that a sensitively negotiated support programme is the best way of ensuring that you reach your full potential. We would, therefore, strongly encourage you to explore the options available as early as possible.
Dyslexia screening
This service will help you check whether the difficulties you are experiencing are dyslexic in nature. This will also help you decide whether you wish to have a diagnostic assessment that will give a full breakdown of your needs. The screening service is free and can be arranged by contacting any member of the team. Make an appointment by using our contact details below.
Diagnostic assessment
If your screening indicates the likelihood of dyslexia, a full diagnostic assessment will be offered to you. This will provide you with a full report on your dyslexia and will help us to make sure your support programme best meets your needs. Funding for this may be available through the Access to Learning Fund (ALF). You will be asked to make a contribution of £50 towards the cost. This is a small proportion of the actual cost of the diagnostic assessment.
We can help you to:
- Apply to the Access to Learning Fund to fund your diagnostic assessment
- Apply to your Funding Body for the Disabled Students’ Allowances to pay for your study related support
- Organise appropriate examination and assessment arrangements
What might we be able to provide?
- Screening for specific learning difficulties (dyslexia)
Diagnostic assessment for dyslexia
Assessment of study support needs at the Staffordshire Regional Access Centre

What to expect
- Many of the students we support are dyslexic and we are well equipped to provide support.
- If you think you may have dyslexia, we can offer you an appointment for dyslexia screening. This will give you an opportunity to discover whether the issues you are encountering are dyslexic in nature. We will offer you an appointment within one week of a request.
- A full diagnostic assessment can then be arranged within four weeks. Funding for this may be available through the Access to Learning Fund (ALF). You will be asked to make a contribution of £50 towards the cost. This is a small proportion of the actual cost of the diagnostic assessment.
- Once we have received a copy of your diagnostic assessment we can arrange support (notetakers, readers, study support or dyslexia tuition, including examination and assessment support) within one week.
