Cost of Living
As well as tuition fees, it’s worth remembering that accommodation costs, food, clothing, books, travel and socialising will all have to be covered during your studies.
Our fully-furnished on-campus accommodation is very popular, good value and has a vibrant atmosphere. Living on-campus is also the perfect way to meet lots of new people.
We also operate a Landlord Registration Scheme to help you find local privately-rented accommodation of a good standard.
As an undergraduate, you will normally be guaranteed on-campus accommodation if you have named Staffordshire University as your firm choice and apply to study with us by 30 June.
University accommodation
The cost of university-managed accommodation varies according to the type of room, but prices include all utility bills (water, power), personal possessions insurance (items worth over £1,000 require separate cover), Internet access and an Accommodation ‘starter pack’. You will need your own TV licence.
Private rented accommodation
If you choose private rented accommodation, the likely cost of rent is as follows:
| Stoke, £ per week | Stafford, £ per week | |
|---|---|---|
| Room in a student house | 35 - 50 | 48 - 65 |
| Renting a whole terraced house | 80 - 95 | 110 + |
Annual contracts are usually 42 weeks for a room or 52 weeks for a whole house.
You will also have to put down a deposit, which you will get back at the end of the year, provided you haven’t damaged the property or left any outstanding bills or rent. The deposit is usually one month’s rent (maximum two months).
Bills
You will usually be responsible for paying your own gas, water and electricity bills if you live in private rented accommodation.
Estimated costs are as follows:
- Gas approx. £6 - £10 pw for the house (divide by number of tenants)
- Electricity approx. £6 - £10 pw for the house (divide by number of tenants)
- Water approx. £4 pw for the house (divide by number of tenants)
- You will also need one TV licence per TV owner in the property (£131.50 per year) - not just one licence for the house.
Course costs
Don’t forget to also allow for books and any special equipment you may need.
