Still wondering what student life is all about?
Our staff can give you an idea of what to expect from the course and your tutor.

Dr Jamie Cleland
Senior Lecturer, Sport and Exercise
I teach on Staffordshire University’s Sports Sociology programme.
My subject area is all about the sociology behind sport, such as the influence sports have on society, the globalisation and consumption of sport and how some social groups are disadvantaged in the opportunities available to them.
I know I am biased, but I reckon Staffs Uni has some of the best lecturers in the business – as well as facilities which advance student learning.
We are a student-centred community and we’ll put your achievements before anything else.
The Sport and Exercise department is run really well – in fact, when I came for my job interview, I got a real buzz. The sort of buzz I expect you’ll get at an open day.
Sarah Rowlands
Head of Journalism
Before joining Staffordshire University, I worked at the BBC for 26 years – mainly as an executive producer responsible for TV and radio documentaries.
All the experience I gained at the BBC – and the expertise of my fellow lecturers on the Journalism courses – helps bring learning to life.
Study at Staffs and you will be treated as a journalist from day one, with real deadlines and real opportunities to publish your work.
Most important of all, you’ll never go unsupported. You’ll even be given our mobile numbers, just in case you’re out on an assignment and need editorial advice.
Our facilities include print and broadcast newsrooms, a professional four-camera studio and news desk.
We also have three professional radio studios.
Dr Bobbie Fletcher
Award Programme Manager, Computer Games Design
I’m proud to have helped Staffordshire University become one of the country’s leading universities for courses in Computer Games Design.
Come to Staffordshire University and the equipment you’ll use will be industry standard, such as our £150,000 games development engine provided by multiplayer games engine suite developer, Monumental.
You’ll work in an authentic ‘games team’ environment and, upon graduation, there will be no aspect of games design language you do not understand.
Our courses include Computer Games Design and Programming, and Games Audio Design. There’s even a Multiplayer Online Games degree.
Our graduates have gone on to work for some of the biggest names in the business, including Codemasters, Rockstar North (Grand Theft Auto!), Frontier Games and Konami.
Lisa Mountford
Senior Lecturer in Law
At Staffordshire University Law School, we aim to show how Law has both a practical and an academic side.
We have exceptionally good facilities, including a mock courtroom and a dedicated legal library. As an indication of the quality of our courses, we also have accreditations from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Standards Board.
As well as teaching Law, I am a local magistrate. This helps me bring a flavour of the legal profession in the real world to everything I teach.
If you are thinking about a career in Law, get as much practical experience as you can. Go to court, talk to the lawyers - and even ask if you can do some work experience.
Dr Roger Summers
Senior Lecturer in Forensic Science, Policing and Criminal Investigation
I have been fascinated by Forensic Science for as long as I can remember, and have worked as a Director of Forensic Services for the Police and as a Forensic Advisor to a former Deputy Chief Constable.
At Staffordshire University, I find that my former experience allows me to offer a good mix of academic knowledge and practical expertise.
To help make learning realistic, Forensic Science, Policing and Criminal Investigation students have access to an authentic crime scene house, cover such issues as post-mortem and even simulate post-crash triage situations at East Midlands Airport.
If you are looking for a challenging career, where no two days will be the same, a future in Forensic Science could be for you.
Paul Williams
Programme Area Manager, Business School
I joined Staffordshire University Business School after a career in Further Education. Before that, I worked in banking and finance.
Nowadays, employers look for graduates with an all-round understanding of business and the environment in which it operates.
In short, a business education needs to equip you with the skills to succeed, both in the UK and in an increasingly competitive global environment.
For that reason, everything we teach at Staffs Business School relates not only to British business, but also to international business and enterprise.
Our courses span every facet of modern business. There’s even a Foundation Degree in Business Start-up that includes access to one of our Business Villages, from where you can start your own business.
