Assessment DetailsAn EXAM length 2 HOURS weighted at 50%. An ASSIGMT length 1500 WORDS weighted at 50%.

1) An assignment 1500 words 50%, learning outcomes 1, 3 and 4
2) Two hour written examination 50%, learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4.


Indicative ContentApplication of semiconductor devices and components in the high voltage environment: Static and Dynamic Characteristics, Series and parallel operation, damping components.
HVDC Converters: analysis, operation. Advanced concepts and topologies, HVDC light.
Static Var Compensators (SVC): analysis and operation
Thyristor controlled Reactor, Thyristor Switched capacitor, STATCOM.
Introduction to Multilevel converters.
Design of High Voltage valves (switches) for HVDC and SVC systems.
Testing of High Voltage valves
