Advertising graduates make their big commercial break

Work by Esme Burford for Degree Show 2010

Innovative ideas to advertise Subaru’s latest car, English ales in Spain and Fred Perry’s music brand Subculture are among the briefs which are sure to impress visitors to this year’s Degree Show.

Advertising and Brand Management students will be in the Dwight Building to pitch their proposals and advertise their abilities after working on a wide range of live briefs with clients and agencies.

Many students worked together in teams, such as Kieran Ainsworth and Leanne Holloway who have created a clever campaign to celebrate the launch of the Subaru Impreza Cosworth STI.

After being given the brief during their placements at Birmingham agency Unsuitable, Kieran and Leanne came up with a scientific formula theme to create a buzz around Subaru’s exciting collaboration with Cosworth.

“Our website and iPhone app enable people to create and share their perfect formula for a car using Subaru and Cosworth parts,” explained Leanne, who also worked with Kieran on a quirky campaign to promote Metro newspapers.

Lauren Awcock, Esme Burford and Mark Smith have created a brilliant Monty Python-inspired identity for the Andalucia Brewing Company – a new business, based in southern Spain, which is targeting Andalucia’s expat community with their array of English ales.

Mark also worked with Luke Gregory to develop a social media strategy for Subculture. They used Fred Perry’s famous laurel wreath logo by colouring its leaves to represent different genres of music; creating a site called ‘The Tree of Influence’ where web users can discover new artists.

All of these projects can be viewed by the public, along with briefs from other BA(Hons) Advertising and Brand Management students, from Saturday 12th until Saturday 19th June at Staffordshire University’s College Road campus in Stoke.

Award Leader John Delacruz is delighted with this year’s briefs: “There’s a strong package of strategic creative and media integration across the board. A clearly defined work ethic, creative approaches to problem solving and an entrepreneurial spirit should see students succeed in agencies, client organisations, and maybe even a start-up or two!”

Following the Degree Show, 14 students graduating this summer will be displaying their work at the D&AD New Blood exhibition in London’s Old Truman Brewery.
