Eccentric animals run wild

A lion sculpted out of branches from the local park

Students, staff and visitors of Staffordshire University should keep an eye out for five large eccentric animals after they were let loose from the Cadman Building – but don’t worry they won’t bite.

A lion, giraffe, vulture, tarantula and gorilla – produced by students in their first two weeks at Staffordshire – are all on display in the Flaxman Foyer on College Road.

Students from the courses in Foundation Art and Foundation Design were given just eight days to research their given wild animal before creating a three-dimensional structure using only natural materials they could find.

Each team were challenged with practical issues such as working in 3D, balancing analysis with expression and fixing the materials together securely and innovatively.

Award Leader, Michael Braithwaite said “This project shows what great potential this year’s intake have...they have already proved their drive and determination as well as skill and inventiveness to produce such accomplished works. As a member of staff I look forward to watching all of the students involved develop and mature as creative individuals.”
