Graphic Design continues award success

Graphic Design student Jia Ying Gnoh has won the Coley Porter Bell’s Shine Award for Graphics for his design for their 2010 competition poster.
Jia beat off tough competition in the three stage process of the annual student award. Candidates were asked to demonstrate representations of their best work before being shortlisted to the final 11, who were interviewed in London. Following a successful interview, the finalists were then asked to design the 2010 competition poster. Jia’s design was awarded first place, with a prize of £3,000 and an enviable three months’ paid work placement with Coley Porter Bell.
This is the third award that the talented Malaysian student has won since coming to the University in 2008. Jia was a finalist in the graphics category of the Northern Design Awards which had over 3,000 entries and was also awarded 2nd place in the Penguin Book Design Awards.
Course tutor Barbara Ridley encourages students to start preparing for competitions in the second year of the course. Jia will be among many students at the university who will be entering in various different categories of the D&AD Awards. Jia also plans to enter the Puffin Book Awards in 2010.
Jia is not only winning prizes at Staffordshire University; he is studying here after being awarded a bursary in his home country of Malaysia, which has funded the two years of his course.
