Radio 4 Controller gives Staffordshire students the inside track

Journalism students were treated to a broadcasting masterclass from Radio 4 controller Mark Damazer on Monday (19/10/09) – choosing Staffordshire as his first university talk since launching an initiative to win over younger listeners.

Damazer, who has been in charge of the speech-based station since 2005, spoke about his career in journalism, the public perception of Radio 4 and job opportunities with the BBC, before answering a range of questions from students eager to learn more about the industry.

He told The Guardian in the summer: “What I am trying to do is make Radio 4 attractive to all sorts of people who might be interested in intelligent speech, and not to exclude, because of our tone and choice in subject matter, the younger end of our audience.”

The event follows last Monday’s talk by television presenter, Llewela Bailey, who is best known for anchoring regional news alongside Bob Warman on ITV Cental for two decades.

Completing a trio of top class speakers is L.A. insider and celebrity blogger, Sandro Monetti. From eating breakfast with Angelina Jolie in her bedroom to the time he kissed Madonna, Monetti will be proving there really is no business like show business when he talks to students this Monday (26/10/09) in the Film Theatre on College Road at 4pm.
