Students showcase and sell work at Wedgwood 'Fairytale' Exhibition

By Suzanne Jordan
Students from Crafts, Surface Pattern and MA Ceramic Design courses enjoyed a rare opportunity to showcase and sell their designs at a unique Christmas event. Staffordshire University students were invited by the Wedgwood Museum in Barlaston, Stoke-On-Trent, to be part of the Christmas ‘fairytale event’ on December 8, 2011.
Each student was given a brief to work to, based on the Wedgwood collection theme and visited the museum in October 2011 to access archives and pattern books.
Amy Lyne (3D Design: Crafts) displayed some delicate silver chain seasonal pieces and coasters. Amy said: “I haven’t been involved in an event like this before so it has been really interesting to make something, sell it and be inspired by Wedgwood.”
Francesca Romei (MA Ceramic Design) designed Christmas tree decorations.Francesca said: “I was inspired by the collection of Daisy Makeig Jones. I had inspiration from the archive. I made some stars and some half moons. Although we had a couple of weeks to design products, I had my idea pretty clear in my mind. It is very nice to be part of event like this and we get feedback from people. I have done quite well with my products, the appreciation is good. I am smiling”
Emma Mather, Learning and Access Officer for Wedgwood said: “The students are doing really well and there are some rather large sales taking place. The work is absolutely amazing – interpretations of the collections are really creative. We would like to continue the partnership with Staffordshire University.”
