Research, Enterprise and Knowledge Exchange in Arts, Media and Design
Introduction
Research and Enterprise are at the heart of the Faculty’s mission to advance knowledge and to innovate. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise the majority of research in the Faculty was judged to be of national or international standard. This combination of research and enterprise is now at the core of the Faculty’s activities and is fundamental to our approach in establishing sustainable links with external organisations, and contributing to a knowledge-based regeneration of the region.
With a portfolio of activities which includes research degree supervision, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, postgraduate student bursaries, exhibitions and consultancies, in addition to publications and conferences, the Faculty’s wide-range of activities is a clear expression of its concern with research which ‘makes a difference’.
Our research, enterprise and knowledge exchange activities are organised within two Applied Research Centres:
Centre for Media Arts and Technologies (C-MAT)

C-MAT is a research centre based around the combined expertise in all aspects of the digital media in the Faculties of Arts, Media and Design and of Computing, Engineering and Technology. It brings together Film, Television, Games, Animation, Interactive Media, Journalism, Radio Digital and Streaming Technology in a unique centre maximising the integration of media knowledge, technology, creativity and craft skills.
Its specific focus is to establish collaborative research projects across all aspects of the digital media, as a base from which to work with companies and individuals. We offer expert solutions to the challenges resulting from new technologies, which have changed the way all forms of media are produced, integrated, distributed and consumed. This includes producing broadcast-ready film, television and audio content, delivering actionable research into the implications of digital technology and the emerging business models of the new multi-platform world.
Institute for Applied Creative Thinking (I-ACT)

I-ACT will assist in the application of creative processes to a variety of social, economic, health and educational settings. In particular it aims to promote excellence in the application of creative processes to social, community, cultural and business problems, to develop creative connections between the educational, public, private and voluntary sectors within the city, the county and the region and to enable local, regional, national and international people and organisations to work creatively and productively together.
These aims will be achieved through the application of the practical and theoretical knowledge and skills developed within the team to the needs of people living and working in a range of local and regional community, cultural, professional and business settings.
