3D Workshops (Wood/Metal/Plastic)

Introduction

In these workshops you will be able to cut, shape, manipulate and cast a variety of materials associated with 3D practice including wood, plastics, fine metals, heavy metals, resin, wax etc. This specialist workshop has recently been extensively refurbished and modernised so that these processes can be conducted in a safe and efficient environment. You will be able to use the dedicated equipment including bandsaws, lathes, welders, folders, guillotines and vacuum former.

What facilities are available?

Processes and equipment Woodwork shop

Cutting, shaping and finishing of wood and plastic materials, using bandsaws, sanders, drills, lathes and fretsaw.

Plastics/resins/assembly/finishing

In this room there is equipment for processing, shaping as well as vacuum forming of various plastic materials and working with polyester resin (GRP). You can also spray paint finished models and artefacts using the spray booth after sanding, shaping and surface finishing using the downdraught extraction facility. There is an assembly area with benches and vices to facilitate frame making and construction work. Materials are also issued from here.

Metal workshop

Cutting, shaping, manipulating, welding and soldering various metals using guillotine, bandsaw, rollers, folders, hacksaw, lathe, mig/tig welders, blacksmith¹s forge and blow torches. There are dedicated benches for fine metal assembly work, also an industrial sandblasting machine for surface treatments and metal materials are also issued from here.

Mould preparation

Preparation of moulds and maquettes using wax and gelflex using assembly benches.
