Computing Science and Applied Computing resources

Computers in room K106

The Faculty's impressive range of resources for Computing Science and Applied Computing are primarily based in the Octagon and are supplemented by teaching and open access resources provided by Information Services. In total there are 1000 networked Computers within the Octagon used for teaching, research, staff and student work.

Concourse PCs are available to students when the Octagon is open and they are not being used for teaching. There are two IS technicians on the support desk.  There are quiet study areas with PCs and study areas with PCs for collaborative work plus study areas with laptop ports and a WiFi system.

Students can work independently in faculty labs when they are open and not being used for teaching.  There is also an open access  Lab of Labs available to faculty students in the Nelson library which is open 24/7.  Computing facilities in use.

 Real Time Systems

32 PCs running Labview which allows simulation of a number of environments including a telephone switchboard with conversations between a number of telephones (Up to 6) and a garage with petrol pumps and kiosk operations.  We now have Quad Core Computers in there allowing multi core programming in Lab view.

We now have Mind Storm Robotshere in D10 and a number of automatable sorters and mini production lines that can be configured in various ways and simulations of traffic lights, ATMs and washing machines – all of which use real time systems in the real world, and a multi-application board.   This setup is used for computing modules such as Safety Critical and Embedded - a module popular with at least one local employer who has recruited graduates from it for the last three years demonstrating the relevance of our teaching.
