Engineering and Applied Technology resources

Engineering and Applied Technology resources include industry standard hardware and software. Laboratory equiment is frequently updated, replaced and augmented. Close links to industry help to keep resources current. For certain awards practical sessions may take place off-site to give greater access to kit and procedures. Laboratory based teaching of mathematics usually takes place in the Information Services labs on the Octagon concourse as these support the appropriate software packages. G001(A, B & C) – Design Technology Centre

- 48 High spec PC workstations for use with high quality 3D modelling and general graphics
capability.

- Tesa Coordinate Measuring Machine used for size, shape and positional quality checking of components and assembly relationships.
- Minolta 3D scanner integral to reverse engineering of components whose surfaces comprise
complex compound surfaces. - Motion base Servo driven Hexapod positioning system used in VR simulation.
E016/E016A – Product Design Centre

The product design centre has 6 high specification PC workstations with the latest CAD and Graphics software. There is also Haptic 3D modelling equipment and a Cintiq 21UX Graphics Tablet.. Interdisciplinary teamwork is vital to product design.

Students are encouraged to develop their ideas through traditional and Digital graphic methods and to create prototype models of design proposals.

BSc Hons Students working on a design project. Throughout the course, they learn to identify problems, think creatively, and design innovative and practical solutions.

E016B – Thin Film Laboratory

Edwards Auto 306
Auto 306 is a vacuum coating system capable of deposition at a low pressure of 10-7 torr. Currently this system is utilized for metallization process as well as resistive coating of some small organic molecules such as Metal Phthalocyanine compounds.
Chemat Technology Spin Coater (Model: KW-4A) deposition equipment
Used for providing precise and uniform deposition of thin films material. This system is currently used for fabrication of conjugated polymers and some organic molecules. Ultra thin films devices of the order of a few nanometres have been fabricated using this technique.

Varian Cary 50 UV-Visible spectrophotometer
This system is used for optical characterization of thin film material. Light absorption, transmission and measurements of absorption coefficients are typical examples of investigations being carried out. Thin film layer thicknesses are also measured using this system.
