FCET Builds Stronger Ties with University of Karachi

A meritorious professor from the University of Karachi recently met with staff from the Faculties of Computing, Engineering and Technology and Health as part of a visit exploring cross-institution research and collaboration.
Prof. Aqil Burney met with Prof. Hanifa Shah, Prof. Paul Kingston, Derek Beeston and Kamran Ahsan – all of whom are all working on research projects in health informatics. The visit arose as a result of a previous visit made by Kamran Ahsan to the University of Karachi as keynote speaker in June 2009.
The meeting, chaired by Prof. Mansour Moniri, focussed on developing a collaborative partnership to exploit ICT in healthcare management systems in developing countries to support low cost and more effective health care. The session also allowed Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Maguid and Khawar Hameed from the Faculty to present the innovative work being undertaken by the Centre for Information, Intelligence and Security Systems (CIISS) and other Applied Research Centres in the Faculty.
Prof. Burney highlighted the existing problems in Health Informatics in Pakistan and the need to develop capacity for dealing with the challenges through innovative use of technologies – including mobile and wireless systems.
As a result of this meeting, further discussions are in progress to develop the mutual interest into what is hoped will be a productive and exciting relationship between the research groups.
