What our students say about placements in the UK

Dan Gallagher – Synectics Solutions:     “I strongly believe that a placement year is of huge benefit as part of my degree.  Not only does it give me the opportunity to put my education and understanding to practical use, but I get to learn a lot whilst doing so.” “The true value of a work placement has to be in the experience.  I have definitely learned a lot about the field in which I intend to work and I have grown a lot as a person.”

Nichola Rose – Britannia Building Society:     “Aim to get work experience in areas that interest you.  Apply for placements that you think will be beneficial.  Don’t apply for just anything when finding a placement gets hard and your confidence has been knocked by rejections from other applications.  Pursue your goal as settling for anything  may bring great disappointment.  When things get hard, communicate with the Placement Office as they will always help, no matter what the situation.”

Nick Wilkes – Intier Automotive Interiors:     “Do not be afraid to try anything new.  It may be daunting at first but the results can be very rewarding.  Try and join a large scale project at an early stage.”

Ed Catchpole - Blitz Games Studios liked his placement so much (and they liked him) that he is now working there in his dream job.  Many of our placements students are employed after graduation by their placement company.

What our students say about placements abroad

Martin Evans – Syngenta:     “My placement year in Switzerland has been the most eventful and exciting year of my life thus far. From working at Syngenta I have become more confident and from exploring Europe I have become more adventurous.  The work I have done has not been totally related to my university course, but I have nonetheless found it interesting and useful.  The general business knowledge I have built up will no doubt serve me well for many years.  I hope to one day return to Basel to live and work in this fantastic city.”

Louise Gill, Civil Service,  has been offered a job through her first placement in the UK which she is due to start after her summer placement at CERN, again in Switzerland.

A number of Faculty students have undertaken placements at CERN including Ian Bakera Computer Science student. CISCO also regularly take placement students
