The Centre for Media, Arts and Technologies (C-MAT) is a research centre based around the combined expertise in all aspects of the digital media in the Faculties of Arts, Media and Design and of Computing, Engineering and Technology. It brings together Film, Television, Games, Animation, Interactive Media, Journalism, Radio Digital and Streaming Technology in a unique centre maximising the integration of media knowledge, technology, creativity and craft skills.

Its specific focus is to establish collaborative research projects across all aspects of the digital media, as a base from which to work with companies and individuals.  We offer expert solutions to the challenges resulting from new technologies, which have changed the way all forms of media are produced, integrated, distributed and consumed. This includes producing broadcast-ready film, television and audio content, delivering actionable research into the implications of digital technology and the emerging business models of the new multi-platform world.

C-MAT within the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Technology is led by Professor Stella Mills and within the Faculty of Arts, Media and Design by Chris Priestman.

A recent PhD graduate is Dr. Dave Richardson a Principal Engineer in Synthetic Environments at MBDA UK Limited.
Further information on his research can be seen here.

An example of a C-MAT research project is the Browser Based Delivery System for the Monumental Multiplayer Games (PDF, file size: 2.68MB) Engine which is funded by a Technology Strategy Board grant of £700,000 and is being undertaken in conjunction with four games companies.
