Applied Research
CIISS contributes to the advancement of scientific and technological knowledge and to the local, regional or national economy by producing knowledge which can be applied and exploited. The Centre promotes research and scholarly activities, with emphasis on activities with potential for producing enterprise or consultancy outcomes, knowledge transfer, and skills development within the local, regional or national community. CIISS is tackling national and international agendas around security and secure communications, surveillance systems, future healthcare, the digital economy, the environment, and embedded systems, for example.
We conduct applied research in artificial intelligence, information and knowledge management, service science, computer forensics, digital signal processing, image processing, video analysis, and pattern recognition. CIISS integrates these research thrusts to enable a holistic approach to the development of intelligent systems for applications such as digital security, digital forensics, healthcare, education, environmental protection and organisational efficacy, efficiency and competitiveness.
World-class Multi-disciplinary Team
CIISS brings together a multi-disciplinary team of researchers and practitioners from computing and engineering who are skilled in the
• investigation and development of intelligent software and hardware techniques and systems to meet the technological requirements of real-world problems.
• investigation and development of solutions to meet the human and organisational requirements associated with socio-technical systems.
CIISS hosts expert groups in information and knowledge management, artificial intelligence, digital forensics, and digital processing, analysis or synthesis of one- and multi-dimensional signals.
CIISS leverages the synergy between the skill sets and expert groups listed above to deliver efficient and effective intelligent systems which solve technology problems while taking into consideration the human and organisational context where these intelligent systems are applied.
The expert groups which specialise in digital forensics or in the application of artificial intelligence to problems affecting the natural environment also operate under the banners of 'Security and Forensic Enterprise' (SAFE), ‘Centre for Intelligent Environmental Systems’ (CIES) and ‘Centre for Intelligent Data Analysis’ (CIDA).
CIISS researchers have carved themselves an international or national reputation, and they have attracted research funding from EPSRC and industry to investigate a wide range of contemporary challenges and solutions. Examples of these are: decision support systems, IT for strategic management, agent-based systems, knowledge discovery, one- and multi-dimensional signal processing, analysis, and synthesis techniques or systems, possibly integrated with wireless and other sensor technologies associated with many modern commercial and industrial products or services.
Esteem and Partnerships
Members of CIISS have close working partnerships with a number of public and private sector organisations. These include external academic collaborations around EPSRC-funded projects, industry-funded projects, and co-authored papers, for example.
Examples of our current and previous collaborating universities in the UK and abroad include: Lancaster University, Reading University, Manchester University, University of Kent, Swansea University, University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Coventry University, Bradford University, Keele University, Université de La Rochelle (France), ENSICAEN (France), Fachhochschule Konstanz (Germany), Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Stuttgart (Germany), Harbin Institute Technology (China), Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (Egypt), University of Vaasa (Finland), Purdue University (USA), Victoria University of Australia, Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain)
Examples of our current and previous collaborative research effort with enterprises include: Severn Trent Water, South West Water, National Health Service, Staffordshire General Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, Staffordshire Police, Britvic Soft Drinks Ltd, Deutsche Bank, Argos, Appsense
