A number of these jobs have arisen from the Placement Year, taken between the second and final year.  Students can opt for an official year out of university to work in industry, and naturally many are offered jobs by their placement companies or institutions after they graduate.  The university also has a policy of offering suitable students a grant to start film, television or new media related businesses in their placement year.  Over the last four years around sixty Film Technology students have successfully taken up this opportunity - with one graduate recently selling his start-up production company for £100,000.

The majority of Film Technology lecturers have extensive industrial film and broadcast television backgrounds.  They continue to be active within their various areas and this year have been involved in the production of a full-length feature film, broadcast television programming, several short films, high definition television, live streaming and related activities.  On many occasions students are employed as crew in these projects.
