Staff News

Emily Buckley and Ceri Parsons have both been awarded distinctions on the Research Supervision module.
Ceri Parsons has been proposed by the British Psychological Society media and press committee as the next chair of the committee. (The nomination is to be ratified in early March)
Dr Alison Tweed has been appointed to the post of Clinical Director as from May 2010 and Dr Helen Scott to the post of Academic/Research Tutor as from April 2010.

BPS Approval
Supervisor Training and Recognition (STAR) gets British Psychological Society (BPS) Approval.
The STAR training for new clinical psychologist supervisors, delivered by the Shropshire and Staffordshire Clinical Psychology Training Programme has recently been approved by the BPS learning centre for the purposes of continuing professional development. The BPS were satisfied that the learning objectives for STAR met the specified requirements and all forthcoming STAR events will now include the BPS approved logo on advertisements and certificates.
Conference News

Alison Tweed, Clinical Director on the Shropshire and Staffordshire Clinical Psychology Training Programme recently presented a paper to the Psychology Learning and Teaching conference in Edinburgh on an evaluative study investigating the psychometric properties and utility of a rating scale designed to assess trainee clinical psychologists' clinical skills. The rating scale is a valid, practicable and useful means of assessing trainees' clinical skills and can be used by supervisors and Programme staff for both formative and summative purposes
Keira Flett presented to the 'CAR Appearance Matters 4 Conference' in Bristol on the 23rd of June on 'Women Smokers' Accounts of Participating in a Facial Wrinkling Age-Progression Intervention', on behalf of the 'Smoking Cessation Project', a joint collaboration between the University and Stoke PCT. The project lead is Sarah Grogan and co-lead is David Clark-Carter.
Julie Hulme presented a paper at the Psychology Learning and Teaching Conference in Edinburgh on 2nd July 2010, entitled “Effective and efficient feedback for psychology undergraduates: it is possible to do both”.

Paper presented in the symposium, "Children’s Engagement in the Arts and its Educational Context" at the Annual Meeting of the British Psychological Society conference, Stratford-upon-Avon (April 14-16, 2010). Paul Jenkinson organised a symposium for the British Neuropsychological Society on 30th-31st March 2010 entitled 'The Great Deception(s): Anosognosia for hemiplegia and other disorders of motor awareness.

Oral presentation at the very prestigious European Stroke Conference in Barcelona, 25th – 28th May. Talk entitled: Experiments in Anosognosia for Hemiplegia: Theoretical insights and potential clinical implications.
Recent Publications

Richard Jolley wrote an article with Bridget Bowie (Speight of the Art Charity) for Child Education Plus. The article described the findings of a Leverhulme funded project on the practices and attitudes that shape children’s drawing development, and included two practical drawing activities for teachers of Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 that were designed on the basis of the project’s findings.Ayers, B. & Forshaw, M. Stephen Gallagher has co-authored a review paper with Dr. Victoria Burns from the University of Birmingham. This has now been accepted for publication and is ‘in press’ in the journal Neuroscience Biobehavioral Review which is an esteemed journal with a high impact factor. The title of the article is “Antibody response to vaccination as a marker of in vivo immune function in psychophysiological research”.

Research and Grant News

Sarah Krahenbuhl has received notice that the British Academy have awarded her a research grant to conduct the following study:
Title: An examination of 'ground rules' implementation and associated effects on children's responses to questions in forensic eyewitness interviews
The study, which will last for approximately 10 months is being conducted in collaboration with Dr. Mark Blades of Sheffield University and Dr. Julie Cherryman of the University of Portsmouth.
