SciChem: The Science of Dramatic Business Improvement

SciChem is a national distributor of science materials and support to schools and colleges teaching the national science curriculum. It’s a competitive market place, and one in which most companies offer similar products and support. SciChem came to us looking for help developing ways they could stand out from the competition.

We called in John Cassella, Academic Supervisor Professor Faculty of Sciences, and together we decided to add a bit of drama to the curriculum: by putting together a Forensic Science Kit that would bring the teaching of basic science to life – turning both teachers and students into enthusiastic Crime Scene Investigators. Forensic Science postgraduate, Philip Morton, was brought in to manage the project and work closely with SciChem and staff at the University to develop the packs and market the materials to schools.

And the results were far beyond what we originally hoped to achieve.

As well as getting pupils engrossed in chemistry, biology and physics, after the first year SciChem has sold in excess of 1,100 kits and generated over £50k in revenue. The project has also led to the creation of new jobs, both for SciChem and Staffs. Which, during a time of recession, is an achievement in itself.
