Who is the course designed for?

The Business of War and Terrorism course is one of the courses provided by Staffordshire University on the MOD Short Course portfolio.

This course is designed specifically for members of the Tri services who aim to learn more about the business principles of war and terrorism including the economics of the arms trade, war finance and a cost-benefit analysis of security.

What is the outline of the course?

Day 1

  • Lectures: The Economics of War: The Arms Trade
  • Discussion 1: European Defence Force

Day 2

  • Lectures: Procurement; Case studies:
    • NATO/Kosovo 
    • Aircraft Carriers
  • Discussion 2: Defence spending

Day 3

  • Lectures: Transnational Terrorism; Case study: Afghanistan/Yemen
  • Discussion 3: Terrorism

Overview of Elective Assessment

There is an opportunity to undertake an assessment following this three day intensive element of the Business of War and Terrorism course.  The assessment is at Masters level and is worth 15 credits.

What are the learning outcomes?

  • Analyse war and terrorism using economic theories of defence and security;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the defence literature e.g. war finance;
  • Evaluate applications of defence policy e.g. procurement and arms trade.
