When disputes occur in HEIs they can become extremely complex and long-lasting. Such disputes are expensive, and whether the cost is in administrative time or in legal advice, it can easily escalate. They can have an adverse effect on an HEI's reputation, for it is not uncommon for them to get into the newspapers. Students and employees and HEIs themselves can spend many years caught up in such situations.
We shall explore with HEIs ways of improving practice in the resolution of disputes. The planned outcomes of this project are: an improved awareness in HEIs of the ways in which disputes can begin; the development of speedier routes to constructive solutions; and well-designed training for mediators working in HEIs.
To determine HEIs' experience with mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.
To discuss with HEIs ways of identifying disputes which are suitable for mediation.
To work with HEIs to develop training needs assessments for mediation.
