Abstract
The concern of this paper is access to higher
education in the UK. Some recent policy
developments concerning student funding
are reviewed. A study is then reported which
identifies the profiles of those young people
who applied to and those who were accepted
by UK universities during the period 1991
to 1998 inclusive. Geodemographic analysis
was used to identify these profiles and
the associated participation rates. This
paper therefore measures outcomes and falls
into what has been called the 'equality
empiricist' school. Slight changes in these
geodemographic profiles over the eight-year
period suggest that historically disenfranchised
groups have marginally increased their presence
in higher education. The paper discusses
the implications of the data and the future
use of geodemographics in this area.
