2. Please send me a copy of the latest code of practice described in section 22 (3) of the Education Act 1994 which you have a statutory duty to prepare, issue and when necessary revise.
3. Has your student union published in the past 12 months a list of a list of the external organisations to which the union has made donations in the period to which the report relates, and provided details of those donations?
4. Please give me details of the communications strategy for this code of practice regarding existing students for the past 12 months and all relevant communications material relating to this.
5. Please give me details of the communications strategy for this code of practice for prospective students for the past 12 months and all relevant communications material relating to this.
Public Interest Justification
The Education Act 1994 places certain statutory duties upon Universities with respect to their relationships with student unions. It must be in the public interest to know whether a public body (a University) is complying with the law.
Your University provides support in the form of facilities and other income to the Student Union. It therefore is in the interests of increasing debate around the effective spending of public money to know whether the University is also providing the necessary level of oversight with that funding which the Act requires.
As there is already a statutory obligation to know this information and to know it regularly there should be no effective cost in providing this information unless the University is in breach of the law in this regard.
1. The Universitys Code of Practice on the operation of the Students Union and its relationship with the University and students is available on the University website at URL

2. See 1 above.

3. This information is available on the Students Union website at URL

4. See 1 above.

2. The current levels of fines charged for overdue library books. If those levels have changed over the five academic years mentioned in point 1, I would also like to know the levels of fines which were previously charged, from 2006/07 onwards.

3. A general outline of what the university typically spends that money on.

I would like to receive this information electronically at this e-mail address, richardwilliamsjones@gmail.com, to help cut down the cost of this request. If any information is withheld, please inform me of that fact along with the reasons why
1, The amount of money obtained by the university in fines for overdue
Library books in the following academic years: 2006/07, 2007/08,
2008/09, 2009/10, 2010/11.

2011/12 3,000 as at 30.9.11
2010/11 78,000
2009/10 63,000
2008/9 49,000

2. The current levels of fines charged for overdue library books. If
Those levels have changed over the five academic years mentioned in
Point 1, I would also like to know the levels of fines which were
Previously charged, from 2006/07 onwards.

Before July 2011, level of fines were:-
2 week loan - 25 per day to a maximum of 10 per item
24 hour/48 hour loan - 50p per hour to a maximum of 10 per item.

From July 2011, current level of fines for books:-
2 week loan - 25p per day to a maximum of 10 per item.
1 day/2 day loan - 1 per day to a maximum of 10 per item.

3. A general outline of what the university typically spends that money on. In essence we get our operating budget reduced by the amount of fines we predict to make so it really goes to supporting the usual operations of the service - its not additional income with which we can undertake new activities or purchase additional resources.
