25 November 201523 December 20158 December 20151 Following where an undergraduate student is required to withdraw due to academic failure, how many attempts should have failed?
2 What do you call the first stage of the appeal process?
3 Is there a time limit by which this should be submitted?
4 If unsuccessful, is there a further stage
5 If so, what is this called?
6 What is the time limit?
7 At which stage has internal procedure been exhausted for the purposes of OIAHE?
1 Following where an undergraduate student is required to withdraw due to academic failure, how many attempts should have failed?
Students who fail to pass a module at the first attempt will be offered a second opportunity, provided they did not receive a mark of `N (non-submission) for their first attempt. Students who fail to submit at first attempt will be considered at an Award Board and may exceptionally be offered a second attempt.
A student who fails at both their initial and second attempt may be granted an exceptional third attempt by the Award Board.
2 What do you call the first stage of the appeal process?
A request for a review of an Assessment/Award Board decision.
3 Is there a time limit by which this should be submitted?
Within 15 working days of the publication of the formal award board decision.
4 If unsuccessful, is there a further stage
Provided the student has a grounds for appeal (outlined in section 2 of the Procedure for a student to appeal against the decision of an Assessment/Award Board, attached), and should their appeal not be upheld at first stage, a student will be informed of the opportunity to provide further evidence within 10 working days of the initial appeal decision letter.
5 If so, what is this called?
Not specifically given a label in the regulations, but colloquially referred to as a stage 2 review.
6 What is the time limit?
As above; Students are given 10 working days to provide further evidence following initial non-upheld decision.
7 At which stage has internal procedure been exhausted for the purposes of OIAHE?
If a students appeal does not satisfy the acceptable grounds for appeal (above), they will receive a Completion of Procedures letter directing them to the OIA.
If a students appeal is considered but ultimately not upheld, they will be invited to provide further evidence for a stage 2 review. If, following this review, the appeal remains not upheld, the student is issued with a Completion of Procedures letter, again directing them to the OIA.
