'Ambulance' star launches new community life-saving equipment in Stafford

“This is an extremely important resource for our students, colleagues and the local Stafford community as we know that chances of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest are increased by a third where an AED is available.”

Mike Phillips, Associate Dean in the School of Health and Social Care

Staffordshire University will be giving community demonstrations of AEDs following the launch of a new life-saving machine in Stafford.

Paramedic Darren Neeld, who has starred in BBC1 documentary Ambulance, unveiled the new facility at Staffordshire University's Centre of Excellence in Healthcare Education this week.

Darren, who serves with West Midlands Ambulance Service and is a graduate of Staffordshire University's Paramedic Science course, was joined by Paramedic Science 'student of the year' Emma Bywater.

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) was launched on British Heart Foundation's Restart a Heart Day and is sited close to the entrance of the Centre in Blackheath Lane, Stafford, where it is available 24/7 to people in need of emergency treatment.

Mike Phillips, Associate Dean in the School of Health and Social Care, said: “This is an extremely important resource for our students, colleagues and the local Stafford community as we know that chances of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest are increased by a third where an AED is available.”

“In keeping with the theme of Restart A Heart Day, the launch was also an opportunity for invited guests to see students demonstrating these life saving devices in our new Clinical Skills Lab.”

Mike added: “We want to make sure people living and working locally in our part of Stafford know this facility is here. We're already in talks with community based charity Heart of Weston about how we can work with them longer term to raise awareness of cardiac arrest and help protect those living in our community.”

The AED demonstrations take place on the next Stafford Open Day on Sunday October 29 between 2pm – 3pm. Anyone wishing to attend the community demonstration should email lisa.morgan@staffs.ac.uk.
